About Our Gate Services
A gate needs to look right, swing cleanly, latch every time, and hold up to daily use. Cut Once Construction builds wood gates and steel-framed gate options depending on the homeowner’s needs, opening conditions, and how the gate will be used.
Every gate we build is planned around the specific opening, swing direction, post condition, and hardware needs. Gates are not one-size-fits-all — the right gate for a side-yard privacy fence is a different project than a driveway gate or a security-style entry gate.
We can help homeowners choose a gate style, match existing fencing, replace a failing gate, or tie in a new gate as part of a larger fence project. View our Fencing page if you’re also considering a new fence.
Gate Types We Build
Every property is different. We build gates for side yards, driveways, pedestrian entry points, and everything in between.
Wood Entry & Side-Yard Gates
The most common gate for residential properties. Wood entry gates work well for side yards, privacy fencing, and standard home entry points. Built to match your existing fence style with a clean finished look.
Steel-Framed Wood Gates
For homeowners who want a stronger, longer-lasting gate, steel-framed options are often the better choice. Fabricated in-house with wood, ornamental steel, or other infill options depending on the project. A serious structural option for side yards, driveways, and security applications.
Driveway & Double Gates
Single and double gate options for wider openings, driveways, and RV access. Planned with the full opening width, post spacing, swing clearance, and hardware in mind. Available in wood or steel-framed builds.
Pedestrian, Entry & Access Gates
Pedestrian, entry, and access gates are important for multifamily properties, shared access points, and higher-traffic walk-through areas where security, durability, and hardware selection matter. Wood entry gates are still a common option for residential side yards and rear yards, while ornamental steel pedestrian gates are a strong choice for controlled-access or visually distinct entry points.
For properties with frequent in-and-out traffic, stronger hinges, durable latch hardware, keyed entry, mechanical keypad access, padlock-ready hardware, and other controlled-access options may be considered depending on the opening and use of the space.
When ADA requirements apply to the property, we can provide a shop drawing after job acceptance and before fabrication to help confirm gate layout, swing, and hardware selection.
Gate Replacement & Tie-Ins
Replacing a sagging, rotted, or failing gate — or adding a new gate to an existing fence line. We assess the posts, hardware, and opening before building so the new gate fits and functions properly from day one.

Built by Hand for the Opening
Every gate we build is made by hand in our shop, planned and built for the specific homeowner, opening, and project. No stock gates.
Before we start, we plan around the actual opening width, the swing direction, how the gate will clear the ground, what hardware is appropriate, and whether the existing posts are solid enough to carry the load. If posts need to be reset or replaced, we handle that too.
The result is a gate planned specifically for the opening — one that swings correctly, latches properly, and holds up to regular use over time.
What Goes Into a Gate Project
Every property is different. Here’s what we factor in when scoping and building your gate.
Opening Size & Posts
We measure the opening and assess the existing posts. If posts are damaged, rotten, or undersized for the gate load, we replace them as part of the project.
Swing Direction & Clearance
Which way the gate swings, how much ground clearance is available, and whether the surface is level — all factored in before framing begins.
Frame Material
Wood frame or steel frame — chosen based on the opening, intended use, and what the homeowner wants in terms of strength and longevity.
Hardware Selection
Hinges, latches, and lock type selected for the gate weight, use frequency, and the homeowner’s entry access needs.
Lock & Access Needs
Padlock-ready, keyed, keypad, or standard latch — determined based on how the homeowner wants to manage access to the space.
Fence Tie-In
Whether the gate ties into a new fence build or an existing fence line, the connection is planned so the whole project looks and functions as one clean installation.
Hardware & Entry Options
Standard Hardware & Locking Options
Every gate includes latch and hardware selected for the gate weight, frame type, and intended use. Standard hardware is padlock-ready — a common choice for side-yard and privacy gates. Hardware selection is worked out based on the opening and how the homeowner plans to use the space.
Keyed Entry Hardware
Keyed lock hardware for homeowners who want a more controlled entry option — a reliable choice for gates that see regular use from multiple people.
Mechanical Keypad Entry
Mechanical keypad entry options are available for homeowners who want controlled access without a key. No electrical connection required for mechanical keypad models.
Self-Closing Hardware
Self-closing hinges are a practical addition for pool gates, side yards with pets, and any entry point where the gate should always close behind the user.
Automatic operator options may be discussed for appropriate driveway gate projects when the opening, structure, and scope make sense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you build wood gates?
Yes. Wood gates are the most common option we build for residential properties. We build side-yard gates, privacy gates, entry gates, and fence-matching replacement gates in both single and double configurations.
Are steel-framed gates better than wood gates?
It depends on the project. For most standard residential side-yard or privacy gates, a properly built wood gate works well. For wider openings, heavier daily use, driveway applications, or homeowners who want the longest-lasting option, steel-framed gates are typically the better choice. We’ll walk you through both options based on your opening and goals.
Do you build gates by hand?
Yes. Every gate is built by hand in our shop, made specifically for the homeowner and the opening. We don’t use prefab or off-the-shelf gate products.
Can you match my existing fence style?
In most cases, yes. If you’re replacing an existing gate or adding a gate to an existing fence line, we build to match the style, wood species, and picket layout as closely as possible.
Do you replace gate posts and hardware?
Yes. If the existing posts are rotten, undersized, or out of alignment, we replace them as part of the gate project. Hardware is included with every gate and selected for the specific use case.
Do you offer keypad or keyed entry options?
Yes. We offer keyed lock hardware, mechanical keypad entry options, and padlock-ready locking hardware depending on the project. Lockable-by-padlock hardware is the most common upgrade for side-yard and privacy gates.
Can I send photos to start an estimate?
Yes — photos are one of the most helpful ways to start. Send photos of the opening, the existing gate or fence if there is one, and any details about what you’re trying to accomplish. You can submit them through our estimate request form or call us directly at 925.233.9000.
